Restoration Services for the Optical Internet

چکیده
In this paper we propose a new approach for optical layer restoration management in a dynamically reconfigurable optical network. The optical network consists of Optical Layer Cross-connects (OLXCs) which have the ability to convert the wavelength of any incoming channel to any outgoing wavelength (i.e. have wavelength conversion). Recently, there has been intense interest within the optical networking community and in standards bodies on bandwidth management in dynamically reconfigurable optical networks [e.g. 1,2,3,4]. In these networks, it is assumed that the physical hardware is deployed, but that network connectivity is not defined until high bandwidth connections referred to as lightpaths are established within the network. The lightpaths are provisioned by choosing a route through the network with sufficient available capacity. The lightpaths are established by allocating capacity on each link along the chosen route, and appropriately configuring the OLXCs. Restoration is provided by reserving capacity on routes that are physically diverse to the primary lightpath. In this paper we present a new approach to restoration for the future optical Internet, employing distributed restoration bandwidth management, failure detection and failure handling.

Restoration Design in IP over Reconfigurable All-Optical Networks
Large IP backbone networks today are mostly deployed directly over sequences of point-to-point DWDM systems or chains of newer ROADM-based ultra long haul systems, interconnected by OEO regenerators. The next generation core optical network is moving toward an all-optical network architecture that is based on multi-degree ROADMs to reduce OEO regeneration cost as well as enabling automatic reco...

Given the wide range of services to be offered by future optical backbone networks, network survivability becomes a quintessential aspect of network design. The survivability schemes of such networking infrastructures can be realized in two basic forms, viz., restoration-based and protection-based schemes or an appropriate combination of both. This article provides a brief overview of survivabl...

Internet traffic has surpassed voice traffic and is dominating in transmission networks. The Internet Protocol (IP) is now being used to encapsulate various kinds of services. The new services have different requirements than the initial type of traffic that was carried by the Internet network and IP. Interactive services such as voice and video require paths than can guarantee some bandwidth l...
